London Gay Men’s Chorus kick-starts video campaign for gay youth

A new campaign in London against bullying, very similar to the "It Gets Better" project here in the US, the London Gay Men's Chorus recorded a video as part of the Proud2Be Project, which aims to encourage gay youngsters to be proud of their sexuality.

The Proud2Be Project, which was founded by Matt and Jon Price last year, aims to include more videos from organisations and individuals as well as continuing to petition for change. It is hoped the project will also put on workshops, produce documentaries and exhibitions, and initiate Proud2Be centres.

                            

The founders encourage anyone who supports the project to send in videos and the identical twins explain their reasons for initiating the project on their website: “As children, the overriding message we received from our school, our church, the media and society was that being gay was something to be ashamed of. Although many would argue that times our changing, for us change could not come fast enough,” they say.

“Still the messages our LGBT youth receive are not too dissimilar to the ones we heard as children. When a child is told at school to ‘act less gay’ to avoid being bullied, the message is loud and clear. When a teacher fails to challenge a student who uses the word ‘gay’ as a put down, the message is loud and clear. When public figures continue to use derogatory and offensive language to describe the transgender community, the message is loud and clear.

They add: “Our desire is for our LGBTQ youth to access a new loving message and for that message to be as loud and as clear as the rest.”

We wish them all the success that the same project has achieved here in the states and hope that this movement will spread to the corners of the globe. There is a long road ahead, especially in view of the upcoming elections and the potential for a backslide in LGBT rights should the GOP gain control of hte government.

Tennessee Bill: It’s OK To Bully Gay Kids If You’re A Christian Or A Republican

Seems that our bigoted friends are at it again in the great state of Tennessee. With an anti-bullying law already on the books, the bigots in charge (spelled GOP/Republicans) want to pass an amendment that will allow just about any person the right to bully anyone else, for just about any reason, and be lawfully covered in doing so. The hatred and bible-toting "Christians" (spelled GOP/Republican) just have to make sure that the serfs perform according to their plan of worldwide domination... or else!

The proposed bill would amend the state’s current anti-bullying laws to specify that the anti-bully policy should “not be construed or interpreted to infringe upon the First Amendment rights of students and shall not prohibit their expression of religious, philosophical, or political views” as long as there’s no physical threat or threat to another student’s property.

I personally think that 2012 is going to be a very backward year concerning LGBTQ rights and the return to the days of open hatred, physical beating, law-enforced bullying, and so many other anti gay actions returning to life. Hopefully not, but it seems that state by state, the GOP gay-hate agenda is marching forward one step at a time.

There are, so far, over 5911 "likes, and 4985 comments - as varied and some as idiotic as the right-wing "Christians" still use to try and justify their only answer to this controversial issue, a message of hate and intolerance for any beliefs other than their own self righteous, bible thumping screams of bigotry and hypocrisy.

What DOES the Bible say About Same-sex Marriage?

So does the Bible have anything to "say" about gay marriage? The Bible is not specific, literate, or even concerned with what we call same-sex orientation or gay marriage. But the state of New York recently had quite a lot to say about gay marriage. Those that would insert the Bible into this debate would do well to reflect upon the text itself. If only we quit focusing on what the Bible didactically "says" and converse with the text in its broader cultural context. Then one can realize the multivalent value of such a book that a narrow reading cannot service.

The anti-gay, anti same-sex marriage proponents are very quick to extrapolate verses out of context to justify their biased  stand against equality. Here are a few of the most used examples as explained by Lee Jefferson, Professor at Centre College:

First, the institution of marriage is a secular and social institution. In different ancient cultures, marriage was more of a business arrangement, joining families together for mutual benefit. Under Roman law in the first centuries of the Common Era, there were proper opportunities for divorce and the dissolution of a marital union for both parties. However, as the Christian church grew, marriage became more ecclesiastically governed; the church dictated the rules of marriage (as well as the rules of dissolution, as many remember Henry VIII's desire for a papal annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon). The Christian governance of marriage fractured during the Protestant Reformation. Figures like Martin Luther and John Calvin recognized marriage as a civil matter, a worldly affair, and not under the aegis of the church. Still there are many Catholics and non-Catholics alike who recognize marriage as a Christian affair, and further, believe it is divinely endorsed as a heterosexual institution. In my local paper in Kentucky, a letter was sent in to the editor lambasting the New York vote, claiming that marriage was created by God since the story of Adam and Eve is the proof-text. Advocates of this position should note, that Adam and Eve would still need to purchase a civil marriage license if they sought to get married today.

Second, the Bible does not clearly endorse one form of marriage over another. Adam and Eve as the divine groom and bride is one Biblical arrow in the quiver of same-sex union opponents. The Yahwist creation story in Genesis (the second creation story) has God forming Eve out of Adam's rib, and Adam exclaiming their unity ("this is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh"). This is a gender creation story, not a creation of marriage story. Adam and Eve do not exchange rings, say "I do" and have a jazz band reception in Paradise.

Third, the Biblical arguments against same-sex marriage are not proffered from texts that deal with marriage, but from texts that purportedly deal with same-sex orientation. Same-sex marriage is rejected as un-Christian and immoral on the basis of a myopic reading of a very few Biblical texts. And the texts in question are scant indeed. The most referenced texts are Genesis 19; the holiness codes of Leviticus 17-26, and in the New Testament, Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:9 and his Letter to the Romans 1:26-27. Not only does one have to "hunt" for references to same-sex practices, but there are no gospel texts that treat the matter. There is nothing attributed to Jesus of Nazareth that has anything to do with same-sex orientation. According to the gospels, Jesus never commented on same-sex practices; that fact certainly bears repeating to anyone criticizing the gay community on Christian grounds. Largely, same-sex practice is a topic of little interest to the Biblical authors.

The Biblical texts that are most often cited in the same-sex debate deserve some explanation in order to reduce their citation for hurtful purposes. For example, the text of Genesis 19 centers upon the story of Lot's visitation in the city of Sodom by two angels. The men of Sodom tell Lot to hand over the male visitors so that they may "know" them, i.e. sexually know them (giving rise to the term "sodomy"). Lot bargains with the visitors, quite horribly to a contemporary reader's eyes, by offering the men his virgin daughters instead. However, any reader of ancient literature (of which the Hebrew Bible is a component) would realize the familiar motif concerning hospitality. For example, the Greek gods Zeus and Hermes would frequently disguise themselves as humans in order to ferret who among their supplicants were truly hospitable. The story is not one denigrating same-sex practice; instead it upholds the incredible (and ludicrous) hospitality of Lot as a virtue.

Similarly, the holiness codes of Leviticus thread down from an all-encompassing mandate to behave distinctly from their foreign (and depraved) neighbors. Leviticus 20:13 that proscribes the death penalty for same-sex relations is quite related to codes that condemn bestiality, invoke dietary restrictions, and order the wearing of certain fibers. The codes make the Israelites unique from their neighbors, and they reflect a particular time and place in Israelite history. Any contemporary critique must note this reality before invoking the codes as ammunition against same-sex practice.

Fourth, any reference to same-sex practice by a Biblical writer or a Greco-Roman writer has no knowledge or understanding of the concept of "same-sex orientation." There is no Hebrew or Greek cognate word in the Biblical text to reflect the modern term "same-sex orientation" or "homosexuality." Moreover, there were no discussions or arguments concerning sexual orientation in the ancient and late ancient world, conversations that would only arrive in the modern era of psychology. Instead, ancient writers believed any wanton sexual behavior of any variety is a mismanagement of one's appetites. The apostle Paul, in the New Testament, follows this pattern.

The Pauline letters that are raised in the same-sex debate are part of Paul's understanding of sexual immorality in the first century CE. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul includes in a laundry list of vices "male prostitutes" and "sodomites" (as malakoi and arsenokoitai are translated by the NRSV; 1 Cor 6:9). These terms are injected along with many other vices: "fornicators, idolaters, adulterers," and Paul is addressing the issue of a church member sleeping with his stepmother. In other words, Paul is addressing ALL deviant sexual and immoral behavior, not just that of a same-sex variety. In his address to the Romans, Paul describes the root sin of the Gentiles as idolatry, and the consequences of idolatry are vices beginning with women and men "exchanging" natural intercourse for unnatural. While Paul is describing this behavior as the result of wayward passions, the chief sin is idolatry and separation from the one true God. While the Romans text offers the longest discussion of same-sex behavior in the New Testament, it is unclear whether it truly is a condemnation of a specific practice.

The above discussions will likely never satisfy any opponent of gay rights or of same-sex marriage to any degree. When teaching Biblical material to undergraduates I am always anxious when approaching the issue of same-sex orientation and the Bible, especially teaching in the Bible Belt. But many of them question the validity of basing every aspect of their lives entirely on what the Bible "says." They realize that the Biblical material is very diverse, and also very condemnatory. For example, Jesus reflects on the Adam and Eve passage cited above to insist to his listeners that those that divorce and re-marry commit adultery (Mark 10:1-12; Matt 19:4; also Luke 16:18). The Bible "says" a lot of things but perhaps we should treat the Bible less like an authoritative contract with God and understand it more as a human-authored, divinely-inspired, document that arouses a life of faith.

A Major Milestone? DOMA Repeal Advances in Senate | News | The Advocate

I don't like to 'copy and paste', but this information needs to be disttributed as quickly as possible, so here it is from the ADVOCATE.COM:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to move forward a bill that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

The committee voted 10-8 along party lines in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act. Its prospects on the Senate floor remain unknown, however. Introduced in the Senate in March by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the bill currently has 30 cosponsors.

In opening remarks, Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said that as a result of DOMA, "thousands of American families are now being treated unfairly by the federal government. They are shunted aside — singled out from all other marriages recognized by the states."

But Republican senators including Ranking Member Chuck Grassley of Iowa criticized the intent of the legislation. Grassley used common arguments against marriage rights for same-sex couples including concerns about child welfare — rhetoric discordant with the body of social science research.

As expected, there was no GOP support for the bill among committee members. Grassley said it was unlikely that the full senate has sufficient time to vote on the bill and doubted adequate support for the bill exists. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) concurred, and asserted in remarks that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has no intention of bringing the legislation to the floor in the current session.

Taking the 'bull' out of anti-bullying programs

Linda Harvey - "Christian"

Anti-gay activist Linda Harvey  is still at her agenda of forcing her views on everyone. Now her claim is that sexual abuse if the reason people 'turn' gay. Such statements just prove that she is so far out of the mainstream and reality of the obvious...bullying kills kids. There are too many studies, too many professionals, and way too many families that are suffering the consequences of their child, now dead, being bullied to the point of suicide.

"Among recent tragic teen suicides, some were, or were thought to be, involved in homosexuality. But the picture is mostly murky, with activists making unsupported accusations while downplaying any role played by personal struggles, peer conflicts and/or family issues."  (Linda Harvey)

Linda Harvey clearly has a problem she needs to seek help for. She is a hate merchant who seeks to destroy people who are different from herself. She has zero compassion for and zero understanding of the LGBT community and what they deal with on a daily basis. People like Harvey should be the ones hiding who they really are. Her hatred, ignorance, and paranoia poisons the world and she should be ashamed to call herself a human being. I wonder what her childhood was like. It’s obvious she has some unresolved issues. Anyone who can hate like that clearly needs therapy and anger management classes.

Petitions, Causes and the Collective Movement of Change

I taught English at University and post-secondary level, and although it did cringe a little at the vernacular of this petition, my mission is to stop the hate, put an end to the bullying, and save the lives of as many teens as possible. I write, blog, post, read, research and spend so much time on this thing called the "social network" that it almost has possessed me. However, I not only signed the petition, which asks you to sign up with the option to receive more information as it becomes available, but just like almost every other source of good, dependable information for all of us (instead of trusting every source on the internet), I posted this petition on my blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts in the hopes that it would push more people to get off their apathetic butts and actually feel the time is right to make their voices be known.

Yes I agree that the wording, emphatic caps and sentence structure are all off the chart - the passion, coupled with the fact that someone took the initiative to do something about this very serious issue in the lives of the LGBTQ community and those who are discriminated against and thought of as being lesser persons far outweighs my need to spend time tearing down this author. I would rather, even through misspelled words and terrible sentence structure, help save one more life and be proud to say that I have had a part in ending the bullying and hate. I too was bullied in school and even in my later life now as an adult. I understand how passionate this person is and chose to overlook these infractions and put my force behind the thought. Please, I encourage people not to waste time tearing apart a persons passion for a good cause, but to throw their enthusiasm into supporting that passion and help put an end to the bullying and loss of teenagers as a result of it. One of those kids might just be your own. One final thought...how many causes, petitions or change.org actions have you already supported that only may have contained one or two errors in the wording, but you felt strong enough to sign anyway. It is not the counting of errors that we should focus on but rather the end result. That is when change happens, that is when lives are saved. My thanks to the author of this and every other person who starts a cause or petition to save a life. I would ask you this: what more nobler thing is there one can do than effect change and save lives?According to the Bible, the answer would be to give your own instead. Be passionate, spell words wrong if that is what it takes, help rewrite a petition, but for the sake of the "cause", please get involved and put aside your need to criticize. That is when you become part of a larger action and help effect positive change. Thanks to those who sign these petitions and causes; to others, please, please overlook the obvious and believe, if it makes sense to you internally, in the validity, or lack thereof, of these causes and go with your heart. It will make a world of difference you probably don't even know.

I firmly believe that a part of the "dumbing down" of Americans is directly related to the rise in poverty, lower education levels achieved in our grade schools, and the lack of higher education being available at an affordable price for those who choose (or can afford) to go on to achieve a higher degree. Much of what we are seeing now in the Republican agenda is the push to cut education costs, de-fund college tuition assistance and generally speaking, make us all just a little less questioning of the overlords who truly rule this country. This serves their purpose well and is, in my estimation, the major reason that this country is in the position we are now. Current statistics estimate that 1 in 4 Americans possess level 1 literacy skills (the lowest so far.) That translates into a staggering 44 million Americans that can not read or write at even the most basic of levels. Bringing that thought back around to the subject, this is the reason that, while I cringe when I see poorly written language as is the subject of all this commenting - I have to look away and look beyond the obvious and determine the true meaning of the author's intent. In this case I firmly believe that this is a good cause, one the author is passionate about, and I am not in a position to question their background but rather, will this further the cause of ending hate, LGBTQ bullying, and change the collective mindset of a society that is heading down a dangerous path.

I hope in the process that I didn't commit too many grammatical errors so as to turn anyone away from seeing the tree in the forest.

Michigan GOP Gives Anti-Bullying Bill A Loophole

Michigan Dems say the Republican Senate gutted an anti-bullying bill when they added a clause that allows bullying based on “moral convictions.” SB 137, also called “Matt’s Safe School Law” after 14-year old Matt Eppling who committed suicide in 2002 after being bullied, was approved in the state Senate by a 26-11 party line vote, and will now head to the House.

The bill lays out what exactly constitutes bullying, but in one key part it says that the legislation does not prohibit First Amendment rights, and “does not prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction of a school employee, school volunteer, pupil, or a pupil’s parent or guardian.”

The Detroit News reports that Senate Dems tried to add language that would specifically prohibit bullying on the basis of race, gender, sexual preference, etc., but were unsuccessful. “I am ashamed that this could be Michigan’s bill on anti-bullying when in fact it is a ‘bullying is OK in Michigan law,’” Kevin Eppling, the father of the bill’s namesake, said in a letter.

Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer (D) called the final version of the bill a “blueprint for bullying” in a floor speech. “Here today you claim to be protecting kids and you’re actually putting them in more danger.”

This article is a little one-sided in its idea that bullying in the schools is a unresolved issue in that schools across the country have no idea as to how to deal with bullying in school. I disagree, and in fact, have provided resources on this blog as to established programs that are available for not only schools in general, but very specific for students and administrators alike.

One of the longest and most in-depth programs is several years old and actually was established before bullying became such an issue. Dr. Phil McGraw's son, Jay McGraw,  created a school program meant to address bullying on levels and was instrumental in getting it into many schools across the country. He also has written a book on the subject. There are also many other in-school programs that provide sensitivity training for teacher and students in the form of assemblies, group discussions and one-on-one role playing.

New Hampshire House Panel to Vote on Gay Marriage Repeal | New Hampshire | The Advocate

As we reported earlier, the Republican controlled New Hampshire House is attempting to repeal the laws that made NH the 5th state to allow same-sex marriage in 2010. On Cotober 25th the New Hampshire House Judiciary Committee voted 11-6 along party lines today to send a bill restoring the definition of “marriage” as the union of one man and one woman to the full House after Christmas.

The bill — HB 437, sponsored by Rep. David Bates — would also expand the state’s civil-union law to any two unmarried adults, even if they’re related.

“If we’re going to create a legal status for individuals with rights and responsibilities for the special relationship they have, there’s no good reason to make that exclusive to homosexuals,” Bates countered. “We’ve heard for years how it’s none of the state’s business what people do in their own homes and how we have to get the government out of people’s bedrooms. That’s exactly what this legislation does. We created a civil- union status where there does not need to be any expectation of a sexual relationship. It’s more similar to a limited-liability corporation, where people enter into partnerships for a variety of relationships all the time. This bill doesn’t encourage incest any more than an LLC law.”

Hopefully the governor will remember his veto power when it comes across his desk for certain signature.

New Hampshire GOP to try and Repeal 2009 Same-sex Marriage Bill

This coming Tuesday the NH House Judiciary Committee will vote on a bill sponsored by Rep. David Bates, a Republican from Rockingham, that would essentially not only repeal the 2009 bill making NH the 5th state to allow same-sex marriage, but might even send civil unions back into the closet.

The 2009 bill was passed by a predominately Democratic Legislature and Governor, and a current poll by the WMUR Granite State poll from the University of New Hampshire Survey Center found that only 27 percent of 500 randomly selected adults reached by telephone support repealing the law, while 50 percent are strongly opposed to repeal.

NH Governor John Lynch has indicated already that if this repeal bill passes he will veto it.

What's amazing, even in a conservative state such as New Hampshire, is that politicians are more concerned about who's getting married than jobs, the economy, and our high poverty rate. Or...then again, maybe the Republican controlled state isn't all that concerned about those things. I think the people know what's more important with the current unemployment rate at 5.4% (October 2011) and 7.6% living under the National Poverty Rate.

Santorum: ‘I’ll die’ to stop same sex marriages | The Raw Story

The fact that Rick Santorum is so "passionate" as he says about not allowing gays to marry and putting an end to birth control because they both "violate the teachings of the Bible" is not such an issue as the fact that, if chosen as President he pushes his values on the rest of the country. This clearly violates the Constitution when it comes to the separation of church and state. Religion has no place in the governance of a country as large and important to the economy as ours. Unfortunately, Santorum sees no need to make that distinction and with the support of so-called religions groups nationwide, who are just waiting to impose their own values and ideals on everyone else as being right, his election could put us back to below 3rd world countries such as Nigeria.

Lawmakers in Nigeria (famous as the scamming capital of the world) are currently attempting to resurrect a bill that would outlaw same-sex marriages once and for all and make it a criminal offense even punishable by death, if one is caught, or perceived to be even thinking of, committing a homosexual act of any kind. This leaves the law wide open for interpretation and could allow for the murder of thousands of innocent people just because they are "perceived" to be gay. We don't need such laws here with all the anti-gay agendas in movement around the country now. Many of which enjoy tax-exempt status as they push their radical agenda's.

We need leaders in this country who are more passionate about getting Americans back to work, getting the economy back on track, and creating equal rights for ALL people - gay, straight, or otherwise.

Spirit Day October 20th

October 20th - Spirit Day!

I hope that as many as possible wore Purple today to help focus attention on Spirit Day and a smattering of subjects, including bullying, teen suicide, gay marriage, and other LGBTQ issues. I wore my "It Gets Better" t-shirt so that I could talk to everyone I met about it. Guess what! It worked...and people in general, even in my red-necked, rural town of Vermont at least were willing to listen to me and wish the best for all those that struggle with any of the issues I mentioned.

Like We Said...No Accountability for Politicians

I've said way back from the  beginning that people, that includes parents and politicians, must be made accountable for their actions concerning bullying and bearing false witness. DADT was finally out the door on September 20th of this year, and the sky hasn't fallen yet. But tell that to Sen. McCain, who vehemently said that soldiers would leave in droves, the army would fall apart at the seams, and it would bring about such disaster within the armed forces that we would no longer be recognized as a world military to be reckoned with.

Well Sen. McCain, where are the deserters? Why is the military still functioning the same as it did before the repeal? Why are you not being held accountable for all the lies, threats and false statements you made preceding the repeal?

If ridiculous predictions had any bearing on credibility, conservative Republicans would never be able to utter a word about economic policy in public again without being laughed at. We’re talking about a group of folks who said Reagan’s tax increases would be a disaster, Clinton’s agenda would cause an economic collapse, Bush’s policies would work wonders, and Obama’s agenda would make the 2008 crash even worse."

I guess that accountability depends upon which side of the fence you happen to be on at the moment.

Gay Right to Marry in Iowa in Jeopardy

A special election for a state Senate seat could threaten Iowa's status as the only Midwestern state where gay couples can marry. Republican Governor Terry Branstad's decision to appoint (R) Senator Swati Dandekar to the Iowa Utilities Board ensures Republicans will have a shot at sharing control of the Senate.  Now, what the appointment to the Utilities Board has to do with same-sex marriage is anyone's guess, and probably a good question to ask of Republican Senators.

Democrats have used their 26 to 24 seat majority to block a number of GOP efforts, most notably a proposed constitutional amendment to overturn Iowa's gay marriage law. Branstad and the Republican controlled House support beginning the multi-year process of referring a constitutional amendment to voters. A 25 to 25 split wouldn't ensure they would succeed in the next legislative session, but their odds would improve.  The Iowa Supreme Court has already ruled that banning same-sex marriage would violate the constitution. However, in the interest of deflecting the public from important issues, like jobs, housing foreclosures and other important issues, the Republicans are spending more taxpayer money in an attempt to overturn the law allowing same-sex marriage. Just another case of no logic and STUPID PEOPLE running amok with taxpayer money.
